Genre immersion is a logical way to frame your reading curriculum and organize direct instruction. These lessons feature basic reading skills and concepts that readers must master in order to understand the realistic fiction genre. This unit is the first in a series which guides students into a rich understanding of literature by applying similar skills to different fiction genres, deepening their analysis as they go (se "Heat Map" in the preview).

This unit is the first in a series, so the lessons lay a foundation for reading fiction in general, then reading realistic fiction in particular. For a list of the included lessons, see preview.
Each lesson is accompanied by an extension which serves as guided practice. The extension sheets include:
Format: These pages are small enough to be stored in reading notebooks as a reference.
Daily Reading Focus
Also included is a powerpoint which can be used to project the daily “reading focus.” This is a prompt that asks students to apply the learned skill to their independent reading book. Students jot down their response on their Reading Bookmark (included).
