20 Research or Debate Questions for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
The 20 questions are based on controversial issues addressed in Rebecca Skloot’s book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
I’ve used these in different ways.
1) I’ve used them as prompts for research. This allows students to select a research questions that interests them. Then, they can do preliminary research and take a position on the issue.
2) I’ve also use this as a class activity where I pair up students and assign 1 question per pair. After reading the article provided, the students each take a side on the issue (one for and one against), and they must come up with the 3 most convincing reasons to support their position.
Each creates a Power Point and presents his or her position and reasons to the class.
I use “clickers” and have the students (privately) vote for the most convincing arguments. The students enjoy seeing who “won” the debates.
This is a great way to get students actively engaged in some of the most interesting debatable issues Skloot touches on in her book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
