This assignment forces students to write concisely and on-topic. I ask them to use a line that especially moved them from the novel, short story, or poem we are reading and then write a 200 word essay. The line serves as the title.
There are various "hoops" they have to jump through that all are designed to instill good writing practices (no passive voice, varying sentence structure and openings, etc.).
This document is for The Crucible, but it can easily be modified for any work of literature. Included is a teacher model and rubric.
