Description

CALDECOTT AWARDS are the American Library Association's yearly ILLUSTRATOR AWARDS for best illustrations each year. In 2013, six amazing picture books received this award. Six were awarded silver medals and the seventh was awarded the top GOLD medal.

Kids Wings has created literature guides for all six winners of the 2013 Caldecott Awards to bring excitement about skill-building using award-winning books! The guides feature a wide array of activities that relate to the picture books.

The winner of the Caldecott Gold Medal in 2013 was This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen. We have also included a guide for the sequel for this same author's picture books, I Want My Hat Back.

THIS IS NOT MY HAT by John Klassen, winner of the 2013 Caldecott Medal

Simplicity and honesty lead the way in this winner of the 2013 Caldecott Medal.

A thief who happens to be a very little fish announces simply that he stole the hat he is wearing from a very big fish.

Does the little fish think that the big fish will notice?

Does the little fish think that the big fish will even care?

Will the big fish know who took it if he does care?

Does the little fish know that it's wrong to steal?

Does the little fish think he will get caught?

When he begins to worry, where will he hide?

Is the little fish right about anything?

I WANT MY HAT BACK by Jon Klassen (Bonus Book)

When Bear discovers that his hat is gone, he goes from one forest animal to another to try to gather clues. Has anyone seen his red pointy hat? No one admits having seen it, but suddenly Bear realizes that HE has seen his hat on the head of ...

Someone HAS stolen Bear's hat. That someone stole it and LIED about it, too. Are stealing and lying permitted? What do you think Bear will do?

What do YOU think happens? Will stealing go unpunished? Will lying ever keep you out of big trouble?

ONE COOL FRIEND by David Small, Winner of a 2013 Caldecott Honor Award

In One Cool Friend, you get to meet Elliott, a very special kid who loves animals and science! In particular, he loves penguins. One day, when his father took him to his favorite place, an aquarium, an amazing thing happened. He came home with a penguin in his backpack!

What will his father say? What would your daddy say?

Would he be able to feed it? Would YOU?

How would he keep it cool? How would YOU keep it cool?

You will love the story, the illustrations, the speech bubbles, and the surprise at the end!

Our Kids' Wings literature guide has discussion cards, activities, and research that will extend your fun! Here's the beginning of a readers' theater script to introduce the book.

EXTRA YARN by Mac Barnett, Winner of a Caldecott Honor Award for 2013:

Here's Kids Wings summary written by Suzy Red:

Cold, snowy winter,

Frosty little town,

White icy coldness

All the town around.

Annabelle and Mars,

Digging in the snow,

Find a box of yarn

With magic that will grow.

She knits herself a sweater

And when she is all done,

There is still some extra yarn

So she makes her doggie one.

Look! She still has extra yarn

And now she sees her friend.

A sweater for Nate and one for his dog,

Will the extra yarn ever end?

She makes sweaters for students,

For her teacher too.

She knits sweaters for others.

But she's still not through.

Is there a bottom in this magic box?

Can an evil one steal it away?

Read Extra Yarn in our library,

And maybe some magic

Will come your way!
