With the 2014 Winter Olympics upon us, what a better way to learn the science of sport than in a multi-disciplinary student led project that incorporates visual and speaking components.
Students will start with a "Job Application" to be a recruiter, historian, fashion designer, or physicist. Based on these applications, teachers can form groups of about four students. Sport selection can then be done by request, or random. (A list of the Winter Olympic sports is included as well.) The groups will then embark on their Olympic journey. Technology will enhance this lesson, and sample websites and apps are given to guide students in their research.
Rubrics are included for individual and group presentations. An audience response sheet will keep audience members occupied as they view presentations as well.
Some elements of the project may be assigned for homework, or the entire thing can be completed in class. Five to ten teaching periods is recommended, based on the number of students in the class.
All documents may be edited to differentiate for a particular group of students.
