As a teacher (of Social Studies specifically), I believe it is vital that students understand their rights and responsibilities found within our nation. With this being said, when I approach the topic of elections, more precisely the Presidential Election, I find that students do not have much knowledge of the essential steps in this process. Understanding that, this workbook is designed to help students better understand the Presidential Election process here in the U.S.
In this workbook, you will find the following information and resources including websites, video links, charts for student completion, question guides, a survey and helpful tips, to make teaching these topics a bit easier.
Items/Topics covered in this workbook include:
*K-W-L chart on elections
*U.S. Presidential Election - How does it work?
*The Five Complications of Presidential Primaries
*Primaries vs. Caucuses
*Understanding the Electoral College
*Critical Thinking Questions on the benefit/value of the individual vote
*Comparing and Contrasting the Major Political Party Candidates
*A survey for students to complete to fuel a classroom discussion on how and why parents, teachers, coaches, etc... are voting how they are.
When drafting this workbook, I put much thought into keeping the material multiple sided and really tried to focus on the areas that textbook and regular classroom materials fail to meet my expectations. My hope is that this workbook can help guide you through those tricky topics in a non-biased way.
