The presidential election only comes around every four years, but it’s kind of a big deal, so I wanted to plan something exciting for my students to do.
I designed this unit to accomplish two things: 1) to help the students understand how presidential elections work and 2) to help the students become familiar with the two main candidates in this upcoming election.
This unit plan can be condensed into one or two days of activities, or stretched over a whole week. Each activity could also be used as it's own short lesson, so you can pick and choose. I plan on teaching five 30 minute lessons. I included my detailed plans in this product, as well as blacklines for all of the necessary worksheets. I have modified versions of each reading assignment to accommodate the needs of students of different ages and ability levels.
The lesson plans include:
- a reading activity to introduce main ideas about the election
- completing a graphic organizer about the Road to the White House, including campaigns, primaries, caucuses, debates, and the election process
- simplified platforms for the two main candidates
- a mock debate
- a mock election
