Strengthen your students' writing by giving them daily opportunities to write. There are enough prompts to last through the entire year - from August through May, and these are perfect for journal-writing OR use these for blog topics. We've included both a color and a grayscale version for you.
WHY use a monthly writing calendar?
1. Daily writing also give students a chance to build stamina as you increase the amount of time for writing as the year progresses.
2. Frequent writing gives students a way to apply the English skills you're working on in class. It also gives teachers a means of highlighting various English skills using authentic writing - this is the students' own work, and it doesn't get much more authentic than that!
3. Exposing students to many types of prompts will better prepare them for writing on standardized tests.
HOW to use this?
You could make a copy of the monthly calendar for students to keep with their journals, or project the calendar using technology and let the students take off. Another option is to use this as a station or center during your writing time or your differentiated instruction time. Kids can have a dedicated journal or write on their devices if keyboarding is something you're working on. Surprise students a few times a month and give them construction paper, Astro-brights paper, or fun stationery to write on.
They will love the fun prompts, and you will be confident that your students are fully engaged and building critical writing skills.
WHEN to use this?
DAILY!! Set aside a specific time for writing, you won't be sorry!
