This resource contains a Bank of Math Problems designed to compare the two teams playing in the 2018 Baseball World Series. It includes 122 math problems (and answers) that involve the following skills:
- Finding elapsed time in years
- Subtracting to find how much greater than or less than
- Adding to find the total
- Multiplication of multi-digit whole numbers
- Multiplication of decimals
- Division of decimals
- Finding ratios
- Finding the unit price
- Finding the mean
- Measurement conversions
These problems are based on the “Statistics Sheet for the Dodgers and Red Sox”, which is also included in this resource. The statistics sheet contains three categories of information:
Stadium Facts – field dimensions, attendance figures, and prices (tickets, hot dogs, and soft drinks)
Team Statistics – ages of players, team payrolls, win/loss records, and past world series titles
Batting Statistics from the Regular Season – runs, hits (singles, doubles, triples, home runs), strikeouts, walks, and stolen bases
This resource provides excellent practice with interpreting charts as the students must determine what information on the statistics sheet is relevant and necessary to solve each problem.
The skill level for the 122 problems ranges from 4th to 7th grade. It is just a matter of creating your own worksheets of problems customized to the level of your students by cutting and pasting appropriate problems from the Problem Bank. Or, you can use any of the problems as a template to further customize them and make them more applicable to your situation.
This resource can be used effectively in various settings – whole class instruction, math centers, cooperative learning groups, or as individual student-work.
The documents in this resource are in two formats - editable Microsoft Word 2016 and Adobe Acrobat PDF.
