Chinese New Year is February 16, 2018! It is the Year of the Dog.
For this activity, the students add or subtract 20 fraction problems and say whether the answer is greater than or less than half. They use their answers to color a Chinese New Year picture. The picture is the word "dog" written in Chinese because it is the Year of the Dog. This is great practice to help the students understand how much fractions represent. The students will love doing the math problems in order to color the picture correctly. Also, they will be excited about writing a word in Chinese.
In addition to the math coloring picture, I have included a handout to read with the students that tells a little bit about Chinese New Year.
