Each strategy is introduced with problems carefully designed to prompt student thinking towards discovering that particular strategy. A strategy is introduced or reinforced once a week. There are 4 problems a week (one per day) on the powerpoint and then on Friday, students complete the "Show Your Strategies" page in place of the number talk so you can collect data from each student on their proficiency and flexibility with the new strategy.

Sample Schedule:
Monday- Number talk with problem from powerpoint
Tuesday- Number talk with problem from powerpoint
Wednesday- Number talk with problem from powerpoint
Thursday- Number talk with problem from powerpoint
Friday- Showing your strategies work

Each number talk is designed to take about 10-15 minutes, depending on your student involvement. Perfect for a daily warm up or closure activity!

Number Talk Procedures (2 problems)

Addition Strategies Covered: Making landmark friendly numbers, doubles/ near doubles, Breaking each number into its place value (x2 weeks), and adding up in chunks

Subtraction Strategies Covered: Adding up, removal, place value and negative numbers (x2 weeks), adjusting one number to create an easier problem, and keeping a constant difference

Multiplication Strategies: Making landmark or friendly numbers (x3 weeks), partial products, doubling and halving (x2 weeks), and breaking factors into smaller factors (x2 weeks)

Division Strategies: Partial quotients (x2 weeks),
