While my 9th graders were reading through Romeo and Juliet, some struggled with the language (as many do with Shakespeare). So, to help them put it in their own terms, my class participated in re-writing the famous balcony scene from the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. The class was divided into boy/girl pairs (as best as possible) and each took on the role of Romeo and Juliet as they create the balcony scene as if it were happening at our school today. Romeo is the Captain of the Montague High School football team, and Juliet is the Head Cheerleader of Capulet High School. The two schools are rival teams. Romeo sneaks into the Capulet pep rally where he sees Juliet, later following her to her bedroom window.
