2.4 Product and Quotient Rules
This is the fourth lesson in the Derivatives Unit. The lesson contains Guided Notes, homework, SmartBoard lesson, and all solutions. Don’t forget the added bonus of a math joke embedded into the Smartboard lesson ☺! You may have also opted to purchase the video lesson to the notes.
In this lesson, students will be taught the Product and Quotient Rule. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to know when and how to apply the Product and Quotient Rule. I always start out the lesson with two binomials that are multiplying together. The students and I multiply the binomials, and then we take a derivative. I will redo the same problem using the Product Rule to show the students that it works. I will redo the problem one last time by taking the derivative of each binomial separately, and then multiply the results together. This result will not be the correct derivative. It is a common mistake and one I hope they avoid. I do the Product and Quotient Rule using a box method instead of having my students remember the formulas. I demonstrate the box method (with colors) in my Smartboard lesson. I find the method to be really simple, so check it out and let me know what you think!
I hope you find the notes easy to follow. Please feel free to offer any suggestions on how to make them better as well! Through a community of collaboration, we can better challenge and support our students and their learning process.
All the best,
