Are you looking for fun and effective shapes activities? These high engagement whole class, and small group 2D and 3D activities are ideal for teaching shape identification, attributes of shapes, and getting your class to write about math! Students compare and distinguish between attributes, match geometry vocabulary to shapes, and identify shapes by their attributes.

Based on the wildly popular video and song, “What Does the Fox Say?” this high engagement, hands-on resource includes plane and solid shape and attribute activities for Kindergarten, first, and second grade. I’ve included multiple versions of each activity to make it easy to use and align to the standards in grades K, 1 and 2. This resource may also benefit 3rd graders that need review or extra support with shapes and their attributes.

Carefully designed to be flexible and easily differentiated, I've included everything you need to create an interactive anchor chart (with all of the chart parts), lesson activities that center around the chart, attribute booklets for both plane and solid shapes, and a fun fox shapes writing craft and hallway display. Detailed lesson plans and teacher’s notes with objectives and standards for all 3 grade levels make planning a snap! This is seriously one of the most fun things I’ve ever done with my class!

Make the most of this resource: The anchor chart doubles as a game board for the whole class lessons. The chart parts double as small group and partner games ideal for math centers or intervention groups. The attribute booklets and writing craft are designed to get students writing about math and using geometry vocabulary. The vocabulary word bank and projectable sentence frame posters assist students as they write.

UPDATE: To accommodate varying math curriculum and the different terminology used this file now includes 2 versions of plane shape attributes cards. One using the term “vertices” and a second version using the term “angles.” Choose the set that aligns with your math curriculum and the terminology used. I have also included attributes for the rectangular prism that align with Math Expressions curriculum.

For UK and Australian teachers- This file includes a version using the terms 'figure' and 'trapezium'.

Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).
Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, “flat”) or three-dimensional (“solid”).
Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
