Are your students ready to tackle and explore 2D and 3D shapes? Everything you need to teach an engaging guided math unit is included here! Students will learn to identify 2D shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, and hexagon), identify 3D shapes (sphere, cone, cube, cylinder, and rectangular prism, compose 2D and 3D shapes, sort, and recognize shapes in the real world! This unit is aligned to the common core and only teaches shapes that are required by the common core. You can definitely teach more shapes, but they will not be included in this unit!
These units were developed to be taught whole group but would also work well in a small group setting. The teacher will be guided the students in an I do, We do, You do model.
Note: I realize that many districts require you to split up when you teach 2D and 3D shapes. That will work just fine with this unit! Just teach lessons 1-8 when you each 2D shapes, and lessons 9-12 when you teach 3D shapes!
Each lesson includes a full lesson plan with:
*Warm Up - engaging whole body counting and number sense activities
*Whole Group Activity - students will explore each concept with a hands-on activity.
*Game or Activity - most of the activities in this unit will be partner or small group sorting activities, but not all.
*Independent Follow Up - students will apply what they learned whole group to an independent paper activity.
*Home Extension - students can practice even more at home with a short practice page.
There are 12 lessons in all:
1: Circle & Sorting by Lines
2: Triangle & Sorting by Shape
3: Rectangle & Sorting by Color
4: Square & Sorting by Shape
5: Hexagon & Sorting by Shape
