Sentence of the Day - Expand, Combine, and Create ALL YEAR LONG - 2.L.1f

Are your students having difficulty expanding, combining, and/or creating sentences? Then this is just what you're looking for!
This 198 page download gives you access to a resource to last you ALL YEAR LONG for the Common Core Standard 2.L.1f.

Organized into three main sections {expanding, combining, and creating}, students will work daily on a given sentence. NOTE: Each section contains 60 slides {180 slides in total - one for each day of the school year}.

Read below for more information!

→ The first 60 numbered slides provide a simple, yet complete, sentence. Students will use this to practice expanding sentences. Prompts are given to focus their writing such as
{Who?, Where?, When?, How?, What?, and Why?} Differentiate easily by asking students to provide only one sentence or to provide multiple sentences {depending on their level}

Example → The bus was late. {Why?, When?}

→ The second set of 60 numbered slides provide two simple sentences. Students will use the word box to practice combining the sentences into one compound sentence. Some kiddos needing a challenge? Ask them to expand upon the compound sentence with more detail. OR ask them to think of another way to rearrange the sentence completely.

Example → I was hungry. I made a snack. {I was hungry SO I made a snack. OR I made a snack BECAUSE I was hungry.}

→ The last 60 numbered slides provide a simple sentence STARTER. Students will apply what they’ve learned to create 1 - 3 simple and/or compound sentences - with as much detail as they can.
Differentiating is easy with this task. Challenge students to reach beyond the 3 sentences and/or keep them at one simple sentence.
Consider encouraging them to use the sentence starter as the basis of a brief paragraph and/or a short story. There are many possibilities to extend this activity! The examples below show how students of various writing levels can effectively practice the same skill.

Example → Noah looked around for his backpack.

Example → Noah looked around for his backpack. He couldn't find it anywhere!

Example → Noah looked around for his backpack. He couldn't find it anywhere! He searched his mom's car, his bedroom, the living room, EVERYWHERE.

Example → Noah looked around for his backpack. He couldn't find it anywhere! He searched his mom's car, his bedroom, the living room, EVERYWHERE. He was just about to give up when he thought of one more place to check. He ran to the front door and sighed. There it was! He laughed to himself as he remembered dropping it there yesterday after school.

ALSO included are various ways students can complete their Sentence of the Day.

→ Interactive Journal Pieces - For your students to use all week long! Each day, display a sentence (skill of your choice!) for your class. Instruct students to complete the task underneath the proper day of the week flap. There is also a box for students to record the slide number for easy tracking. Having students complete these activites in their interactive journals is a great way to monitor their progress all year long.

→ Not wanting to use interactive journals? No problem! Also included for your students are easy to use printable pieces. Each printable is labeled for the skill practice {Expand, Combine, Create}. Students will use the space provided {organized by each day of the week} to complete the Sentence of the Day task. At the end of the week, simply collect all papers and assess student understanding.

→ I LOVE variety. Which is why I’ve also included exit tickets for you to utilize, as well. Consider using these as a quick grade and/or skill assessment at the end of each week. Use sentence examples from the slides and/or provide one of your choosing. There are 3 printable options {Expand, Combine, and Create}.There are 2 exit tickets per page. Simply copy, cut in half, and you are all set!
