Addition Math Mystery Activity. Students must use their addition skills to solve the case of the Angry Adder! Easy prep! Just Print & Solve! Or go paperless with the new Google Docs option provided within your download.

NEW - Distance Learning Update: I've added a Word Document within the folder that contains a Google Doc link to share this resource with your students via Google Classroom or Drive. Parts of the pages are editable so that your students can complete without having to print the pages. Please note, you will need to make a copy of the Google Slides to your drive before you can edit.

Engage and motivate your students during math time with this fun addition activity! This version requires regrouping skills, numbers in the questions are within 100

Optional VIDEO HOOK now available as a fun option to introduce this activity to your students. A written story is included within the PDF file if you wish to use instead. Video hook can be viewed in the thumbnail preview section or <CLICK HERE to VIEW Video Hook

NEW - Editable Items list added to the packet. This way you can change the item names and alter the mystery outcome. There are also two alternative pre-made lists you can use instead. This is a great option if your students have already done this mystery story before and you need to change the mystery answer.

There are 5 clues to crack to solve the mystery:

Clue 1: Horizontal Addition (Within 20)

Clue 2: Adding Doubles (Few challenger questions at the end)

Clue 3: Addition Input/Output Tables (apply the rule given)

Clue 4: Addition Algorithms (Within 100 - No Regrouping)

Clue 5: Addition Algorithms (Within 100 - With Regrouping)

Pack also includes a mystery declaration sheet, answer sheets, elimination guide and awards.

Great activity for extra practice/review, enrichment, assignments, or early finishers.

How long will this activity take?

Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, as well as how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I highly recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue." There are lots of ways to implement this activity in your classroom, learn more in the blog post link below:
