Learning Target Posters, Checklists, Rubrics and File Labels - Most schools in the U.S. still use the Common Core State Standards. Those schools typically require their teachers to post their Common Core State Standards learning targets in their classrooms. If you teach in one of these states, you will need to have a set of learning targets to post in your classroom. You will also need a way to organize and track what standards you have covered. Be able to quickly identify which kids need more work with specific standards.
Each standard has been turned into an “I can” statement using student friendly language. Each standard is on its own poster that can be shown using a projector or printed up and displayed in your room. You can quickly locate any specific standard with the index for that section. The CCSS number is printed on the top right hand corner so it is easy to find in a file.
There is a student self-assessment rubric that matches each poster. The students fill these out to tell the teacher they need help, they've got it or they are ready to move on. These can be attached to work, put in journals or used as exit tickets.
I made two types of records. One for tracking an individual student’s progress and one for teachers to track when they have taught/reviewed each standard. There are records for each content area: Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking & Listening, and Math.
These checklists and records have been updated to allow users to use computers to enter data using Acrobat. They can still be printed up and filled in by hand if you prefer.
With the student records there is room to record multiple dates and scores for each standard. In the comments you can list the student’s strengths and/or next steps. You can utilize these for conferences with parents, when completing report cards and as evidence for teacher evaluations.
On the teacher's records there is room to record multiple dates taught and reviewed for each standard. In the comments you can list students who need more review, what went well and what didn’t and what you need to reteach. These can be used for teacher evaluations and future lesson planning.
I use the checklists as a quick reference for my whole class. I use a + for above expectations, a check mark for at expectations, – sign is for below expectations. I can quickly see where each student is at and this helps me with lesson planning, grouping and interventions. I also use these for report cards, when discussing students with my teaching partners/team and for placement at the end of the year.
There are editable color coded file labels with a simple abbreviated numbering system to help organize your common core materials. The small labels fit well on the three tab manila folders. These labels were made in Publisher 2013 with the Avery 5366 template. The large labels describe the standards in kid and teacher friendly "I Can" statements. At my school we are expected to display the standards we are teaching each day in the classroom for everyone to see. I print mine on cardstock and laminate them. You can also add them to a bulletin board as you teach them. It’s a great way to show students, parents and administrators what we are learning.
