Phonics: Sounds Revealed for the Year
The first slide reveals short and long vowel sounds and provides student engagement with a rolling dice for words, reference chart, and directions on how to use with white boards whole class.
Many of the slides in this 66 slide SMART Notebook file has phonics word lists set in a "reveal" mode. I teach the sound the letters make and then ask students to write the words based upon the rule of phonics that we are studying or reviewing. After they attempt, I reveal the word and they check their work. For example, after they wrote "make" I asked if they could use it to spell "bake" and a student replied, "Sure, you just take off the first letter and add a 'b'." They love to guess along the way and are encouraged to write more during our writing block because they have the tools to sound out an approximation of the word they want to spell…we can all read it back even if it's the incorrect spelling of the sound.
Examples of the phonics used are: long vowels (a_e, ai, ay, igh, i_e, etc.), all sounds of y, two sounds for c, two sounds for g, ch, wh, th, sh, ou like couch, ow like crown, ow like bow, etc. Each sound has a corresponding picture for students to think about when they hear the sound in order to help them learn. I use 2-4 slides per week, or more, depending upon where we are in the school year. This are great for initial teaching and reviewing. There are 9 word sorts that can be used in various ways… students can use themselves on the SMART board for a game or you can use it whole class to review, etc.
The slides can be used with a blank composition book where students label each page and use as a tool for practice and reference. You can also use this with the Word Study Notebook by Primary Concepts found at http://www.primaryconceptsdealer.com/shop/word-study-notebook-set-of-20/.
There are MANY interactive word sort slides to practice and review phonics. And, this file is packed with embedded worksheets for review of phonics (click on the link and the Word file opens for you to print, or edit and print as needed).
Use this file all year long to review! Watch them bloom!
