This document contains a Common Core test, Student Tracking Sheet, and Answer Key for 2nd Grade.
I have used a version of this test for my 4th and 5th grade classes. For each of the Common Core Math Standards, there is 1 question. For 2nd grade, there are 28 standards, so this test has 28 questions. While I normally like to ask multiple questions for each standard to ensure students really know the skill (instead of a lucky guess or a misunderstanding of the reading), I like to give only one question so that students will not be tired by the end and put less effort into their work.
I give my students the test three times a year: beginning (before I start teaching anything), middle (usually right before the winter break), and end (last week of school). I give them the same test, but never show them the results or review the test until after all three have been completed for the year. On the tracking sheet, I mark which problems students got incorrect and compare through the year. This shows me growth, and sometimes, who is guessing. For 4th and 5th graders, I often tell them to leave it blank instead of guess (which I still mark incorrect). I do this so that I am not thrown off by a kid getting a problem correct because they guessed instead of actually knowing the skill. During my evaluation with my principal, I had to explain that I do not review the test questions because that would give students an advantage in later testing sessions.
Overall, I use this test to show individual student growth or problems. I also use this test to give myself an idea of what skills I need to focus on with the whole group or individually in tiered learning. Hopefully you find this as useful as I have!
