You can't teach math without word problems! Word problems relate math to the real world and allow children to see math all around them. Word problems also allow students to use their analytical and mathematical skills to solve a problem. And...with all of the rigor increasing on standardized tests, students need lots of practice with word problems.
This pack includes 40 word problems and two word problem graphic organizers for teaching second grade place value. They are aligned directly to the Common Core!
The standards included are:
CCSS. Math. Content.2.NBT.A.1 (Understand that the three digits of a three digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones)
CCSS. Math. Content.2.NBT.A.2 (Count within 1000; skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s)
CCSS. Math. Content.2.NBT.A.3
(Read and write numbers to 1000 using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form)
CCSS. Math. Content.2.NBT.A.4
(Compare two three digit numbers using >,=, and <)
Read this post from my blog to find out how I use word problems in my classroom!
I use word problems daily during Guided Math. This would be the “Story Problem” rotation. You can grab my Guided Math Rotation Board here: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Math-Rotation-Board-287024
My word problems are almost always correlated with the standard being taught at the time. This allows for the students to apply their learning to a higher level activity. For example, when doing a unit on two digit addition, the word problems will also be on two digit addition.
Each student has a math journal. Students will glue these pre-cut word problems into their math journals and will either draw or glue in the word problem 4 square (you can find this on the next page).
I usually have students work on word problems with a partner or in a group of 3. This gives them a chance to talk about their math and gain ideas on different ways/strategies of attacking the word problem.
I have also used these word problems as part of my small group (Meet with the Teacher rotation) during Guided Math.
These word problems can also be used in a whole group setting, as a daily math warm-up, or with parent volunteers.
