This enrichment activity fits perfectly with Unit 4 of 2nd grade Everyday Math. However it is perfect to use when teaching addition and subtraction (fact families) with any second grade math program. This engaging activity utilizes Legos to help extend the idea of math fact families and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Students construct Lego creations that utilize specific amounts of Lego "studs". Students then reflect on various addition and subtraction math problems that can be made using the Legos for their creation. Students also reflect on how to estimate the number of "studs" used by simply looking at others' creations (not taking them apart). This lesson also includes a rubric for teacher and self evaluation. Using Legos is a great way to teach addition and subtraction and get your gifted and high-achieving students motivated about math!
