This file includes a years worth of homework for 2nd grade! Homework sheets give activity choices that educate the whole child - academically, physically, socially, and emotionally. A new grid of choices is offered monthly. I've included a reading log to print on the back of each child's HW sheet. The reading log has a section for Reader's Reflections as well.
The rationale for the homework program is based on the belief that traditional HW doesn't reliably meet the learning needs of many young students. Further, I believe parents & students should have choices about what they practice at home. Also, the differentiated activities offered by this program provide a meaningful application of skills.
Ultimately, the goals of this program are as follows: 1) students explore areas of interest and develop abilities through applied practice, 2) students develop study skills and self-discipline outside of the classroom, and 3) establish a home-school connection, letting students demonstrate their knowledge & skills to their parents.
The expectations for the HW are simple. Students choose an activity from the grid, or a few activities, and practice for 20 minutes daily. They mark those activities with a star. In addition, the students must also read for 20 min. each day and record their reading on the Reading Log. Parents' role is to guide their child to choose activities that will benefit that particular learner and ensure that all work is done to the best of their child's ability.
The HW sheets go home on Monday and are returned, signed by a parent, on Friday. (Any products produced in HW may or may not be turned in, depending on the teacher's preference). Parent education is key, so a parent letter is part of the file.
