This unit of study in writing an Information Text is aligned with the Common Core for 2nd grade. It also can be used as a supplement to Journey’s for 2nd grade Nonfiction Writing and is Cross Curricular in Science for writing a NF texts. There is a focus on Nonfiction Text and Graphic Features in students creating their own “little books.” Additionally there are lessons on pronouns, irregular verbs, and subject verb agreement. There are 18 lessons plus the celebration day.
Each lesson is ready to teach emphasizing the Gradual Release format identifying the standard, teaching point, connection, guided practice, Independent Practice, Check for Understanding, and reflection.
Students will write an informational piece that has five or more sentences under each section/heading. Lessons focus on how to create and use: headings, diagrams, and illustrations to share information about the topic.

• Students use nonfiction text features including headings, diagrams, bold words, captions, and table of contents.
