NOTE: This file is part of a NO FRILLS BUNDLE you might rather buy instead of just a single standard! =)
This is a no frills exercise designed specifically to address the “creating equivalent but easier known sums” mental strategy for these Common Core standards:
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
2See standard 1.OA.6 for a list of mental strategies
The pdf file includes:
* Suggestions for use
* One worksheet
* Answer sheet
The worksheet has 10 problems that use the mental strategy of making doubles to add.
Example: 6 + 7 = 6 + 6 + 1
Centers and games are great reinforcement – but sometimes in the crunch, you just need some papers to send home, or to be able to differentiate easily! I’m working on a series of Common Core “No Frills Practice” for 2nd grade. THIS product and the list below are all part of this 2nd GRADE NO FRILLS BUNDLE. Buy it now and re-download it for free as I update it with additional files. =)
