What Are The 3 Math Game Types?

Flip and Match – In this card game, your students take turns by flipping their cards over to make a correct match. Your students will have to use Math Talk cards to explain their answers.

Face Off – In this game, 2 students “face off” by counting down and turning their game cards over at the same time. Whoever finds the correct answer 1st wins the match.

Four in a Row – In this cooperative game, students work in pairs to answer a variety of questions and mark them on their game mat. The first player to mark 4 answers in a row, column, or diagonally is the winner.

When Can I Use Math Games?

They can be used to reinforce math skills:

    • during guided math as math centers

    • as morning work with students that need practice with a specific math skill

    • for early finishers that need extra practice with a specific math skill

    • as an extension activity for free choice time

    • during teacher small group time to model expectations and math talk

Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method.
