This is a collection of math journal prompts for 2nd grade students. Although they could be used for advanced 1st grade students or 3rd grade students who need additional practice. There are 145 prompts that include questions relating to Place Value Within 1,000, Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20, Two and Three Digit Addition and Subtraction, Time, Money, Graphing, Geometry, and Fractions. All prompts align with the Common Core.
The prompts could be used as a daily seat work/ center activity, exit tickets, or during your small group work time. I left the file in Microsoft Word so that you can easily edit it to fit the needs of your classroom. Sometimes I use student names in story problems or will adjust numbers depending on what skill I may want to review with a small group.
I found it works best to cut a regular sized notebook in half (you could use full sized notebooks as well), have student cut out along the lines of the prompt, and glue it into their half sized notebook. It leaves plenty of room for them to write on the front and back of the page if they need to.
I hope this works well for your classroom. My class loved it last year. It's not fancy or cutesy but it is a wonderful tool for students to see their growth over the course of the school year, can fit into many parts of your math workshop time, and can be used for student portfolios if you use them in your classroom.
