Other FAQs*:

Does it have to be used as is, or can it be used as a supplement? This unit can be used as is, or can supplement your existing curriculum.

Is this product student-centered? This package contains tasks and lesson sequences that are for teachers ready to explore NGSS and try inquiry-based learning. The lessons in this product are designed to put the learning in the hands of the students while the teacher is the facilitator; therefore, they are rigorous in nature. (If you are new to NGSS and/or the 5 Es inquiry-based lesson sequence, feel free to message me for more information to see if this product is the right fit for you and your students.)

What are the lesson plans based on? They are based on the following:
1) NGSS standards and ELA CCSS standards.

2) Inquiry-based learning: This encourages minds-on/hands-on learning.

3) The 5 Es:
Step 1: Engage
Step 2: Explore
Step 3: Explain
Step 4: Elaborate
Step 5: Evaluate
(These steps help with the inquiry process.)

4) Cross-curricular aspects (Reading and Writing aspects are intertwined.)

5) 3-Dimensional Learning required by NGSS:
1. Science and Engineering Practices: These are thinking about and doing science.
2. Core Ideas: These are what we traditionally think of as content/facts.
3. Crosscutting Concepts: Students should be looking for these as they complete the lessons.

Does this product contain worksheets and tests? You will not find traditional tests and worksheets with this product since the NGSS standards are heavy on inquiry-based learning. (See each lesson's objective and what's included for each lesson.)

How many lessons are included? There are 4 "lessons" included. Each lesson lasts 1-3 weeks, or more, depending upon the content. The NGSS Standards require an inquiry approach, so the lessons are in-depth putting the learning in the hands of the students while the teacher is the facilitator. A traditional 1-2 day lesson wouldn’t be adequate to cover the NGSS Standard(s) in each lesson. (Plus the lessons are cross-curricular, integrating a number of second grade ELA standards. This helps reinforce common CCSS reading and writing standards.)

Are facilitation tips included? The unit plan included in this product has lesson sequences specific to each lesson, while the 5 Es facilitation tips give more information about the inquiry-process and general facilitation tips for teachers. There are also facilitation tips for establishing and maintaining appropriate student discourse. (If you decide to purchase, you can always message me throughout your implementation of the standards and curriculum. I've went through the journey with my kiddos and I'm more than happy to share/help in whatever way I can. It can be daunting switching from teacher-centered to student-centered learning at first, but I now fully enjoy the student-centered inquiry-based facilitation model.

NGSS2-ESS2-2
Develop a model to represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water in an area. Assessment does not include quantitative scaling in models.
NGSS2-ESS2-1
Compare multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land. Examples of solutions could include different designs of dikes and windbreaks to hold back wind and water, and different designs for using shrubs, grass, and trees to hold back the land.
NGSS2-ESS2-3
Obtain information to identify where water is found on Earth and that it can be solid or liquid.
NGSS2-ESS1-1
Use information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur quickly or slowly. Examples of events and timescales could include volcanic explosions and earthquakes, which happen quickly and erosion of rocks, which occurs slowly. Assessment does not include quantitative measurements of timescales.
NGSSK-2-ETS1-3
Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs.
