Rationale for Units:

• Based on NGSS standards
• Curriculum formulated using the following steps:
1) Started at the Standard
2) Made an assessment
3) Made/found lessons with activities aligned to standards/assessment
• Utilized Multi-Dimensional Learning Required by NGSS (see tops of unit plans for specific info for each lesson):
o Practices (thinking about/doing science):
1) ask questions/define problems
2) develop/use models
3) plan/carry out investigations
4) analyze/interpret data
5) use mathematics/computational thinking
6) construct explanations/design solutions
7) engage in arguments using evidence
8) obtain/evaluate/communicate information

o Core ideas: what we traditionally think of as content or the “big ideas”

o Crosscutting concepts (students should be looking for these):
1) patterns
2) cause effect
3) Scale, proportion, and quantity
4) systems and systems models
5) energy and matter
6) structure and function
7) stability and change

Biggest Shifts:

• Science should be multi-dimensional (Previous science education has typically been 1-dimensional. It has mostly focused on the content.)
• Exploration is the key: Science should be more about thinking/doing, not just facts. (Direct instruction should be utilized; however, students should explore and start putting the pieces together themselves first. Then, direct instruction should be used to clear up any student misconceptions.)
