This is it!!! Your entire 2nd grade year of science. By teaching these 3 units, 2 science reading activities, and 1 Engineering Design Challenge, you will be covering all of the 2nd grade content standards of the Next Generation Science Standards, as well as the engineering standards for grades k-2. Each unit is packed full of inquiry based activities, integrated language arts, word wall cards, games, task cards, projects, and assessments. Here's a brief description of each unit. If the preview is difficult to see, you can visit the page for each item by clicking the links since each unit is also sold separately. You will save money by purchasing all of these units.
Here's what's included:
Unit 1: Processes That Shape The Earth
Activity 1: Informational Reading: How Did The Grand Canyon Form? Students read about the Earth’s processes that have shaped the Grand Canyon.
Activity 2: Slowly or Quickly? Students classify different Earth events by how fast and slow they happen.
Activity 3: There She Blows Students investigate how wind impacts the earth.
Activity 4: Sugar Cube Shack Students build a sugar cube structure and then simulate rain and examine the impact.
Activity 5: Mud Slide: Students simulate a mud slide using soil and cubes to represent houses.
Activity 6: Volcano Eruption: Students create a simple mini volcano and then add substances to make it erupt.
Activity 7: Mapping an Area Students create a salt dough map and label the important landforms.
Activity 8: Word Wall Cards and Activities: Word wall cards and suggested games and activities.
Activity 9: Earth’s Processes Bingo: To help review vocabulary from this unit, students play bingo.
An optional post test and grading rubric are also included.
Unit 2: Interdependent Relationships in an Ecosystems
Activity 1: Sprouting Seeds: Students plant seeds in Ziploc bags and watch the sprouting process. They compare their seed to seeds that don’t receive water, or sunlight.
Activity 2: My Plant Project: Students choose from 4 seed types to plant. They then keep a journal and observe differences between their plants and those of classmates.
Activity 3: My Plant Journal: Students keep a journal on their plant and record observations in words and pictures.
Activity 4: Plant Life Cycle: Students examine pictures of plant growth and put them in order.
Activity 5: Seed Travels: Students conduct 3 experiments to investigate how seeds travel by animal fur, wind, and water.
Activity 6: Animals Need Plants: Informational reading to show that animals depend on plants.
Activity 7: Parts of a Plant! Students learn about and label the different parts of a plant.
Activity 8: I Eat Plants: In this fun activity, students taste different plant parts. They follow up by making a graph of favorite parts.
Activity 9: Animal and Plant Bingo: To help review vocabulary from this unit, students play bingo.
An optional post test and grading rubric are also included.
Unit 3: Structure and Properties of Matter
Activity 1: What is Matter? : Students read an informational passage and then find examples of solids, liquids, and gases.
Activity 2: Properties of Matter Mini Book: This mini book allows students to become familiar with common property descriptors such as color, size, texture, flexibility and hardness. Colorful posters are also included to help teach this concept.
Activity 3: The Property Game Students play an engaging game focused on classifying matter by specific properties.
Activity 4: Paper Towel Test Students test 3 brands of paper towels to see which is the most absorbent.
Activity 5: Build it Re-Build It Students play a game requiring them to build an object using a specific number of blocks. There partner or group will then build a different object using the same number of blocks.
Activity 6: Word Wall Cards and Word Wall Activities: Word wall cards from the unit are included along with suggested activities.
Activity 7: Reversible and Irreversible Changes: Several demo ideas help students learn that some changes in matter can be reversed and some cannot. An activity sheet is included for students to document observations.
An optional post test and grading rubric are also included
In addition, this bundle also includes 2 informational reading passages with questions. The first addresses standard 2-ESS-1 and is about the eruption of Mount St Helens. The second addresses standard 2-LS-1 and is about how flowers and butterflies help each other survive.
You can check those products out separately here:
The Eruption of Mount St. Helens
How Do Butterflies and Flowers Help Each Other?
Finally, to address the K-2 Engineering standards, there are also 2 engineering challenges designed to address the standards for this grade level. The first is an engaging activity where students design a solution to stop ice cubes from melting too quickly is included. Check that out here:
Ice Cube Challenge
The second challenge involves making a fun and safe house for a cat. Check that out here:
Cat House Challenge
This bundle was created specifically for Grade 2, but would be appropriate for grades 2-4.
