Description
Patterns are an important pre-algebraic skill in primary math classes. I’ve always loved teaching patterns because they are such a fun topic that students love. I developed this mini-unit to make teaching patterning simple and no-prep.
- I created this product based on Virginia 2nd Grade Math Standard of Learning 2.16: The student will identify, describe, create, extend, and transfer patterns found in objects, pictures, and numbers.
- This patterns unit is designed to be prep-free. It is ideal for times when you want students to work independently. These activities can be used to introduce students to patterning as well as to reinforce and practice this important skill. This unit is perfect for work stations, homework, independent student packets, school closures, sub plans, or extra practice. The activities can be used all at once as a packet or individually on an as-needed basis.
- In this mini-unit, students will practice determining if a pattern is repeating or growing, identifying the core of repeating patterns, explaining how a growing pattern is changing, extending patterns, identifying what is missing from patterns, creating patterns, and transferring patterns. There are answer keys for all applicable activities. I included all of the answer keys at the end of the unit in case you choose to use the unit as a packet. I’ve also included “I Can” statements for display in your classroom if desired.
