Isn't it wonderful when you can cross-curricular! These Social Studies passages are great for using in your small reading groups or for independent practice for your strong readers. They are also great to pull out for a sub. I have also used them as a review for a jigsaw, or think, pair, share model. Students would work in groups, read the passages, and then share the information either with the class as a whole, or with other students or groups of students. You could also project a passage and use it as a shared reading, and discussion guide.
If you are a Virginia teacher, these correlate to Virginia Standards of Learning with a range between 1st through 3rd grade, however they meet standards for many other states. The readability varies, but in general students should already have some background knowledge about the content of each passage.
