This center activity is an engaging and fun filled way for students to practice their weekly phonics patterns. This can be used with or without a Reading Wonders curriculum, but it does have the word lists for Second Grade's UNIT 1.
To play, students will take turns rolling a die or spinning the included spinner. Before they can move their piece, the player that takes a turn before them will pull a Spelling Challenge Card from the deck and call out the spelling word. The current player must spell the word (or arrange phonics tiles) correctly before they can proceed.
This center activity increases word recognition, as each word is read aloud to the next player. It also reinforces phonemic awareness when letters or phonics tiles are physically arranged to create each word. This can easily be done with a cookie sheet and magnetic letters or with my Phonics Based Letter Tiles that are also aligned with the second grade Reading Wonders curriculum.
Phonics Skills Covered:
Week 1: Words with Short A and Short I
Week 2: Short E, O, and U
Week 3: Words with Two Letter Blends
Week 4: Words with Short A and Long A
Week 5: Words with Short I, Long I: i_e
*Note: The first ten words each week follow the spelling/phonics pattern, while the remaining five words are made up of sight words and spiral review of previously taught spelling patterns.
(For week 6, I generally try and review words or phonics skills I see students may need extra practice on.)
I always greatly appreciate your feedback, as it helps me improve the quality of my resources!
