NOTE: The document is designed to be printed in black and white, NOT color. For example, some problems will say "7 birds, 3 green, 4 red," but all of the birds are gray when printed. Because as teachers we don't always have access to a color printer, students were instructed to use the black and white pictures of the birds and color them to help solve the problem. If you do print in color, you will notice that all of the birds are actually the same color.

As a Texas teacher, the products I make are designed around the standards for the state of Texas, known as the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and are carefully crafted to help students be successful on the Texas STAAR test. I use the rigor of the TEKS and released STAAR assessments as models to guide me when putting together lessons and materials for my students. Thus, I am careful to post products that, in my judgment, address the standards. I am not affiliated in any way with these entities and any and all claims are mine, not those of the groups behind the TEKS or STAAR test.
NOTE ABOUT THE TEKS--This product addresses fractions to a denominator of 12, as both parts of a whole and parts of a set. The TEKS only address partitioning up to eight parts using words. In my opinion, this product is more rigorous and goes deeper than the Texas TEKS.
There are many teachers in Common Core states looking for quality materials. If one of my TEKS based products addresses standards in the Common Core, I will include those standards in this description. I do not teach the Common Core in my classroom, but am familiar with the standards. I am not affiliated with the entity behind Common Core and all claims are my judgment, not those of the groups behind the Common Core.
NOTE ABOUT THE COMMON CORE--While this product builds foundational skills in working with fractions, the fractions standard in Common Core actually addresses partitioning shapes in geometry, and the 3rd grade standard, in my opinion, is not fully addressed in this unit. Therefore, I am not including this as a Common Core product. Common Core teachers who feel their 2nd graders need foundational skills in fractions are certainly welcome to use these materials with their students should they see fit.
NEW MATH TEKS (2012)
(3) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to recognize and represent fractional units and communicates how they are used to name parts of a whole. The student is expected to:
(A) partition objects into equal parts and name the parts, including halves, fourths, and eighths, using words;
(B) explain that the more fractional parts used to make a whole, the smaller the part; and the fewer the fractional parts, the larger the part;
(D) identify examples and non-examples of halves, fourths, and eighths.
OLD MATH TEKS
(2.2) Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning. The student describes how fractions are used to name parts of whole objects or sets of objects. The student is expected to:
(A) use concrete models to represent and name fractional parts of a whole object (with denominators of 12 or less);
(B) use concrete models to represent and name fractional parts of a set of objects (with denominators of 12 or less);
Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them.
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
