I love incorporating art history in my art lessons. After a trip to Europe I was inspired to create a European based unit in my classes 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. This lesson was specifically designed for 2nd grade, although it could be taught to kindergarten, 1st, or 3rd.
For second grade I decided to introduce them to stained glass windows, specifically the rose window in the Chartres Cathedral and the stained glass in Notre Dame. In the lesson we discuss how art can tell stories through symbolism. The students create their own versions of stained glass with symbolism in them.
This lesson pack includes the big idea, essential questions, goals, objectives, national standards, vocabulary, supply list, step by step instructions to implement the assignment, grading checklist, project examples, extension ideas, tracing templates, and two PowerPoints.
