This resource was designed with Second Graders in mind, but it could also be used with First and Third Graders who need exposure to more varied addition and subtraction word problem structures.
This product includes 12 winter-themed task cards. These cards can be spread around the room and used as task cards with the recording sheet, or one could be used daily as a warm-up activity and discussion.
All of the sums and differences for this product are under 20, but the various problem structures (Addition with Start Unknown, Subtraction with Change Unknown, etc...) add rigor to this activity. Multiple problem structures can be difficult for young learners, so it is important that they are encouraged to show their thinking at every opportunity.
Each task card includes a self-checking QR code. Students can use any device that is enabled with a QR reader app or program to scan each code (I-nigma is my favorite FREE QR app). The code will take them to a text-only file with a complete sentence indicating the correct answer. I would recommend that students do not use the QR codes until they have had adequate time to solve the problem or problems assigned.
