By third grade, many students will be familiar with the idea of weather changes, but may not have had experience with monitoring the weather.
In addition, many of the students will not have had experience with recording and graphing information.
Students will get the opportunity to use their graphing to making informed predictions, which may also be a first. Using learned information to make predictions can be exciting for children, and will encourage their desire to make guesses and check the weather daily to see if their hypotheses were correct.
By putting students in charge of making the instruments and monitoring the daily weather, students gain a sense of importance and ownership in the classes continuing monitoring of the weather.
