Students will choose a sport to research.
They will then research their sport and write an informational paragraph.
Then they will use the information they learned about their sport to create a narrative story. They can use the facts they learn about their sport to describe the setting and characters in their story and to create the plot for their story. ‘
Some students may choose to write a narrative by telling something that happened to them but add some fiction details. Many times, it is easier for a child to tell a story about something they’ve already done. Then they can add fiction details to their story. You could talk about realistic fiction if they choose to do the story this way.
They will write a poem about their sport and an opinion piece about their sport.
This is a great time to talk about fiction vs non-fiction. You can also talk about text structure as you complete the informational article, the narrative, the poem and the opinion writing piece.
You could also have the students create their own book using their article, their narrative, their poem, and their opinion paragraph. You could put construction paper on the front and back and staple it or you could bind each book.
