Literacy workshop with three days of specific lesson plans and homework assignments included based on the book "Frindle".
I taught the five essential pillars of reading instruction each day. Phonemic awareness was focused on during the time that I read aloud. Phonics and concepts about the print was focused on during the time that students followed along in their books while I read aloud and during shared reading time. Fluency was worked on during shared and individual reading and vocabulary was worked on each day during the word activities that were assigned. The writing activities promoted comprehension as did the whole class discussions that we had after the read aloud sessions. I think that it is important to incorporate these five pillars in every literacy lesson and all components need to be strong in order for solid literacy skills to develop. Quality teaching consists of all five components and since no component is more important than another, they should be incorporated into many lessons every day.
