Find a Friend is a cooperative learning structure that gets students up and moving, as well as interacting with each other. Students will practice their place value skills with 3-digit numbers using this activity.
This version is Common Core aligned to the Number and Operations in Base Ten standard 2.NBT.A.1: "Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones." Also, this supports the following special cases: "100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens — called a "hundred." (2.NBT.A.1.A)" and "The numbers 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine hundreds (and 0 tens and 0 ones). (2.NBT.A.1.B)."
In my classroom, we use Find a Friend in many ways:
-As a fun alternative to independent practice
-As a review before quizzes
-For spiral review of previously learned concepts
-Prior to high-stakes testing
Depending on the concept, students may spend 15-30 minutes completing the activity.
An answer key and directions for this activity are included.
