=================

FANDANGO STEW by David Davis
"Slim rubbed his grumbling belly as he rode into the town of Skinflint.
'I'm so hungry I could eat a boiled boot."
Fandango Stew by David Davis is a Western spin-off of "Stone Soup" complete with boots and saddles, horses and sheriff, and a Texas twang. Link it with UGLY STEW by Lisa Wheeler and DUCK SOUP by Jackie Urbanovic and you'll have a whopper of a literary feast, right there in your classroom! Invite students to compare and contrast the three stories to build academic skills. The activities in the Kids Wings literature guide will extend other skills, too, through discussions, drama, problem solving, exploring new Spanish vocabulary, menu-making, and logic. UGLY PIE by Lisa Wheeler
What's a bear to do when he craves some Ugly Pie? All he has at home is some molasses. He doesn't have the ingredients to make one, so he will have to go searching for them. Like the story's author, he loves to visit his neighbors and mooch a taste of the goodies in their kitchens.
Luckily he can sing a song while he's searching. Maybe you can sing along to the tune of "Jimmy Crack Corn." Don't know the tune? (Ask your gramma. She can sing anything.)
Luckily, his friends and relatives can each give him something for his pie. Wrinkled red raisins from Grampa, some sour green apples from Ma Hickory, and some bumpy brown walnuts from Sweet Cicely. Will that make an Ugly Pie?
What's that? You want a bite of Ugly Pie? You're in luck! You can make it yourself from the recipe at the end of the story. It is reminiscent of "Stone Soup."
Ugly Pie by Lisa Wheeler is a cute forest animal story told in country-folk dialogue. After the second reading, your students will be ready to sing-along as you read, and of course, they will want to make an Ugly Pie to share!
