Product Description
About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS 3-LS3-1. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Inherited vs. Learned Traits Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Compare and contrast inherited and learned traits.
2. Give examples of inherited and learned traits.
3. Determine if a trait is learned or inherited when provided information about the frequency of the trait.
4. Observe and model variation in inherited traits among organisms.

Science Skills Station
Students will be provided information about a family of dogs. Students will make observations about the physical features of the dogs. They will also graph data about the dogs and make inferences as to what traits are inherited and what traits are learned.

Narrative Station
Students will read an informational text about heredity and different kinds of traits, such as physical features, behaviors and instincts. They will also read an informational text about inherited and learned traits.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to heredity, inherited traits and learned traits. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will model how organisms of the same species have similar but varying inherited traits. They will demonstrate variation of traits in a species of monsters (a group of similar organisms). Students will design “monsters” that belong to the same species yet have varying characteristics.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
