About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory partially satisfies NGSS 3-LS4-3. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Animal Environmental Adaptations Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss behavioral and physical adaptations that enable animals to survive the cold and barren months of winter.
2. Discuss animal adaptations that allow animals to survive in extreme environments, such as very cold, very dry and chemically toxic ecosystems.
3. Demonstrate how physical adaptations enable an organism to survive extremely cold environments.
4. Explain how the ability to live in adverse environments impacts the ability of an organism to survive.
5. Engineer a solution inspired by animal adaptations that helps a human survive very cold environments.

Science Skills Station
Students will conduct an investigation to determine what materials help keep an animal warm in a cold environment. Students will simulate different insulations that keep an organism warm. They will determine which type of insulation best keeps an organism warm so to withstand cold temperatures.

Narrative Station
Students will read an informational text about animal adaptations that allow animals to survive the cold and barren months of winter. Students will also read about animal adaptations that allow animals to live in extremely hot, extremely dry, chemically toxic and high altitude environments.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to animal environmental adaptations. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will apply an adaptation that enables an animal to live in a very cold environment to a solution that enables a human to survive in like conditions. Students will design a solution that enables humans to tolerate very cold environments.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
