These are simple writing rubrics for Kindergarten or 1st Grade. They are great for getting students to become wonderful authors.
The first rubric helps them to focus on their pictures (where most of the story is at first) and learning to add words to their stories through labeling or writing sentences. The 2nd rubric helps students to focus on writing sentences properly with capital letters, spaces, and punctuation. The final rubric can be used for students who are already writing sentences correctly, and need to focus on the story. Each step in the rubrics can be used to develop mini-lessons for Writer's Workshop.
I have included 6 large versions to hang on the wall as well as 6 small versions for writing journals, mini offices, interactive notebooks, or to attach to student work. The colored version will catch the attention of your students, while the “less-colored” version is more printer-friendly.
9/22/13 Update: Aligned with Common Core Standards for Language Kindergarten and 1st Grade, and Writing Kindergarten and 1st Grade.
I have also added writing paper with the rubrics already on the page. This will give your students a place to check off each item in the rubric as they complete it. The papers are with and without a space for the picture, as well as smaller lines for more advanced writers. These papers can be used for differentiated learning.
Rubric 1 includes:
1. Is your picture colored neatly using 5 or more colors?
