Performance Based Math Tasks are “Real-World” problems that force
students to examine in depth information and think critically!
These open-ended math activities help students develop reasoning and mathematical communication skills, as well as formulate connections and apply them to every day situations.
Because of the nature of these tasks, “answer” keys are often not included. Many times students will surprise you in their approach to solving each task. Enjoy the rich mathematical conversations that arise with your students as you work through them!
Included in this Bargain Hunting Edition:
• Fill It Up!: Solve a gas station problem: to purchase a car wash to get a discount or not?
• Catching a Flight: Evaluate 2 different travel itineraries to determine which flights to choose based on time spent in the air and time waiting at an airport
• Bargain Shopper: Calculate a total for a shopping list and evaluate which coupon to use: 15% off or $5 off of every $25 spent
These 3 challenging tasks are ideal for high performing 4th & 5th graders, and on-level 6th graders. These problems work with decimal computation, percents, discounts, and elapsed time.
