This offering is a three puzzle package of puzzles involving Herman Melville and his novel, Moby-Dick. Included are a "math essay" on general knowledge about Melville in which addition and subtraction is used to come up with the appropriate dates and numbers. (They are NOT that difficult and I have preceded the puzzle with a review of how to proceed. 7th graders through seniors should be fine with the problems. I am TRYING to get students to do more MENTALLY, though they don't really HAVE to.) There is a word search on finding 13 characters in Moby-Dick that will make a nice introduction to reading the novel. And there's a crossword puzzle that would provide a nice look back at Moby-Dick. The clues on Moby-Dick are not deep at all, but the puzzle WILL be enough to force some thinking. My solution page also explains some of my more "uncommon" answers. For younger students it might be best to work the puzzle in pairs or groups. It's intended to generate a challenge while providing some fun. Learning some new vocabulary is always a goal of mine in my crosswords. Remember! The point of a crossword is to have a little fun/challenge while you are learning something. You are not supposed to know each answer right away upon glancing at the clue. It would be no fun if you did. You’d have LEARNED nothing. (This is a message that might be imparted to your students.) I try to phrase enough of the clues so that a student/person will know many of the answers immediately . . . the rest of the clues I want to challenge the doer a little bit. When they’ve learned something through being challenged they’ll appreciate their accomplishment, and the experience, a lot more.
