This offering is a three puzzle package of puzzles involving either John Steinbeck or his collection of short stories, The Long Valley. Included are a vocabulary/matching puzzle with 18 words. There is a short story search on finding all 12 of the short stories in The Long Valley. And there's a crossword puzzle that would provide a nice look back at The Long Valley. There are about 8 of the clues (which I've put in bold-face type) that deal specifically with Steinbeck or The Long Valley. These clues are not too deep, but the puzzle WILL be enough to force some thinking. My solution page also explains some of my more "uncommon" answers. For younger students it might be best to work the puzzle in pairs or groups. It's intended to generate a challenge while providing some fun. Learning some new vocabulary is always a goal of mine in my crosswords. Remember! The point of a crossword is to have a little fun/challenge while you are learning something. You are not supposed to know each answer right away upon glancing at the clue. It would be no fun if you did. You’d have LEARNED nothing. (This is a message that might be imparted to your students.) I try to phrase enough of the clues so that a student/person will know many of the answers immediately . . . the rest of the clues I want to challenge the doer a little bit. When they’ve learned something through being challenged they’ll appreciate their accomplishment, and the experience, a lot more.
