This offering is a three puzzle package of puzzles involving either Edgar Allan Poe or his macabre short story The Fall of the House of Usher. Included are a vocabulary/matching puzzle with 17 words. There is a verb search on finding 18 adverbs that Poe used in The Fall of the House of Usher. I DO give brief definitions of the verbs I'm asking the puzzle-doer to find. And there's a crossword puzzle that would provide a nice look back at The Fall of the House of Usher. There are about 6 of the clues (which I've put in bold-face type) that deal specifically with Poe or The Fall of the House of Usher. These clues are not too deep, but the puzzle WILL be enough to force some thinking. My solution page also explains some of my more "uncommon" answers. For younger students it might be best to work the puzzle in pairs or groups. It's intended to generate a challenge while providing some fun. Learning some new vocabulary is always a goal of mine in my crosswords. Remember! The point of a crossword is to have a little fun/challenge while you are learning something. You are not supposed to know each answer right away upon glancing at the clue. It would be no fun if you did. You’d have LEARNED nothing. (This is a message that might be imparted to your students.) I try to phrase enough of the clues so that a student/person will know many of the answers immediately . . . the rest of the clues I want to challenge the doer a little bit. When they’ve learned something through being challenged they’ll appreciate their accomplishment, and the experience, a lot more.
