The 3 read protocol is a useful strategy to teach students to think about what word problems are asking. Students analyze what is happening in a word problem rather than rushing to solve it without understanding it. This strategy is highly effective for English language learners because of the visuals and the deep analysis of a word story. The students also need to inquire about the story and create their own questions. It is very engaging for students because they are the ones who have created the questions.
This resource includes 1 story problems (two options for differentiation). The story problem has a recording sheet included, vocabulary cards, picture cards, and picture manipulatives that matches the story.
My full version has 10 story problems as well as instructions and pictures to show you one way to use 3 reads. To purchase the full version, visit my store:
This 3 reads resource has many color visuals and is most effective when printed in color rather than black and white.
