The 3 read protocol is a useful strategy to teach students to think about what word problems are asking. Students analyze what is happening in a word problem rather than rushing to solve it without understanding it. This strategy is highly effective for English language learners because of the visuals and the deep analysis of a word story. The students also need to inquire about the story and create their own questions. It is very engaging for students because they are the ones who have created the questions.
This resource includes 10 story problems (each has two options for differentiation). Each story problem has a recording sheet included, vocabulary cards, picture cards, and picture manipulatives that match each story.
This 3 reads resource has many color visuals. If you do not have a color printer, then you can print them in black and white, but the quality will not be as good. Color is important for those English language learners. When you print the pictures, laminate them, so they will last a long time.
